A half-day detour through Arches National Park
Four spare hours after Mount Peale became a fast Arches circuit through 43°C heat, dark storm clouds, Balanced Rock, the Windows and enough roadside geology to justify the detour immediately.
A better use of half a day
After Mount Peale I still had half a day to spend and a simple choice: keep driving east towards Pikes Peak, or drive less and find something interesting on the way. Arches National Park was the second option. I took it, and the decision paid off almost immediately.
I approached from US 191 near Moab with one small financial concern. In 2026 the National Park Service introduced an extra $100 nonresident fee at 11 heavily visited parks. Arches was not on that list, so the additional non-US visitor surcharge I had encountered at Yellowstone did not apply here. At the entrance I paid, collected a map, exchanged a quick hello, and was told that about four hours would be enough to see the main highlights.
The weather was already part of the day: dark cloud, visible rain shafts and, farther east, the same unsettled atmosphere that had followed my morning on Mount Peale.
I did not entirely agree with the four-hour verdict. Four hours can cover the main road and several short walks. Exploring beyond that initial sample would require much more time. For my schedule, however, the advice was useful. It gave the afternoon a practical circuit that fitted my available time.
Every pullout looked necessary
At first I stopped almost absurdly often. A wall, a tower, a colour change, another roadside pullout: all of them seemed worth a photograph. After a while I understood what the park map had been showing me from the start: concentrate on the named stops, or four hours will disappear before reaching the northern end.
The road itself had enough rock towers, open basins and cliff-lined sections to make stopping every few minutes feel perfectly rational.
Roadside ridges, towers and walls made the scenic drive feel less like transport between sights and more like one continuous geological exhibit.
My route followed the main park sequence north from the visitor centre through Park Avenue, Courthouse Towers and the Petrified Dunes area, then towards Balanced Rock and the Windows Section. Everything was well marked, with frequent pullouts and short walks. There were plenty of visitors, but the heat and threatening clouds seemed to keep the busiest places below full capacity. Most importantly for photography, I could usually wait a moment and frame the rocks without dozens of heads in front of them.
Balanced Rock and the Windows
Balanced Rock is one of the easiest major formations to see directly from the road. It is not literally balancing: the harder Entrada Sandstone block is still attached to the softer Dewey Bridge pedestal beneath it.
The Windows Section was the clearest example of why a quick drive through Arches is only an introduction. Double Arch, North and South Windows, Turret Arch and the surrounding formations are clustered close together, but each short walk opens another angle. Arches National Park contains more than 2,000 documented natural stone arches, the densest concentration in the world. The important intermediate form is the fin: fractures divide the sandstone into long walls, and erosion can enlarge weaknesses in those fins until openings become arches.
North and South Windows are two of the large openings concentrated in this compact section of the park.
Not every opening needs a famous name to be interesting. Smaller holes in the sandstone make the much larger Windows easier to understand as part of the same erosion process.
Across the route, openings, pinnacles and broken walls appeared under storm light that changed the colour of the sandstone from one stop to the next.
North through the fins
From the Windows area I continued via Panorama Point and the Delicate Arch area, past Fiery Furnace and towards Devils Garden before turning south again. With limited time, the afternoon became a driving circuit linked by short walks. Even those short walks were enough in the summer heat. At one point the car showed 43°C (109°F), and outside the shade was mostly theoretical. The National Park Service notes that summer temperatures here often exceed 38°C (100°F), making the dashboard reading unpleasant but credible.
By this point the drive itself had become part of the sightseeing, not just transport between stops.
Short walks moved repeatedly between enclosed passages and sudden views back into the open desert.
At close range the rock becomes less about arches and more about grooves, bands and weathered surfaces.
Beyond the named formations, the larger desert remained visible under broken cloud and isolated rain.
Back to the highway
When I turned south, I had stopped trying to visit every pullout and had developed a much better sense of the park. I had seen enough to know that the four-hour plan worked, and also enough to know that it was not remotely the same as “seeing everything.” A few days with longer walks would be easy to justify.
My friend John in Arizona later summarized the detour better than I could: “You see the best of America.” I was happy that I had chosen the park instead of another half-day of highway.
After four hours, I resumed the drive into Colorado and eventually stopped in Parachute for the night, with Pikes Peak as the next objective on the US trip. Arches had already made a longer return visit feel inevitable.
