Checking the calendar and map of the peak I want to climb, it becomes obvious that I have a buffer day. Since I appreciate the price and comfort of the casino hotel in Reno, I decide to stay an extra night. I plan to bag two Ribus and spend the rest of the time catching up on work in the hotel room. Mount Rose is one of the easily accessible Ribus near Reno, making it an ideal choice for a quick and rewarding hike. The convenience of the location, combined with the amenities of the hotel, makes this an excellent opportunity to balance adventure and relaxation.
Starting from the Tahoe Rim Trail location at 39.31379, -119.89754 and an altitude of 2723 meters, the trail begins wide and flat, stretching towards the waterfall about 4 kilometers ahead. As I continue, the path becomes slightly steeper but remains enjoyable, with occasional patches of soft snow adding to the scenery. The gradual incline and picturesque surroundings make for a pleasant hike, offering both challenge and beauty in equal measure.
The summit, though not clearly marked, offers a rewarding view, with Lake Tahoe being the most picturesque sight. Known for its crystal-clear water and being the third deepest lake in North America at 501 meters, Lake Tahoe is a natural marvel straddling the border of California and Nevada. After a quick detour to the lower bump in the southeast, I enjoy a few refreshing sips of water with a traditional apple. Then, I head back down the same path, retracing my steps.
It’s a nice and easy few hours’ walk, with quite a few people doing the same. A good start to the day, I still have plenty of time left, so I’m heading north of Reno to try and bag another Ribu — Virginia Peak. The drive there should be pleasant, with the landscape gradually changing as I move away from the city.
