Groot-Valkenisse

hike | 2022-04-13
54 m altitude, 54 m prominence, 56.42 km isolation

Groot Valkenisse is a beautiful hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland, between Zoutelande and Klein Valkenisse. It was formed from two centres called Valkenisse, Groot being larger than Klein. The dunes in Groot Valkenisse are the highest point in Zeeland, with the highest dune top being 54 metres high – making it the second highest dune in the Netherlands. Having walked around, I can confirm that it is a breathtaking place for visitors to explore and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Long coastline and lots of people
High point next to the trail at the top of the dunes

I had a great time exploring the dune on this sunny day. Despite the crowds of people and cars in the parking lot, I was able to find my way up to the highest peak of the dune. With GPS as a guide, I made it to the NW peak which i found two meters higher than the SE summit.

Wide sandy beach
Hippophae is a hardy and useful deciduous shrub of the Elaeagnaceae family, also known as sea buckthorn, sandthorn, sallowthorn or seaberry.
